Are you out of eggs? The new refrigerator scans groceries as they run out and adds them to the list

Keeping a mental list of groceries you’re running low on is a weekly battle. The new GE Profile smart refrigerator was announced before Consumer Electronics Show 2026aims to take the guesswork out of your next trip to the supermarket.

The brand has introduced an AI-powered refrigerator that can turn your all-important kitchen cold storage space into a smart assistant, featuring a built-in scanner to manage your grocery list, a smart hub for recipe suggestions, and a live camera feed designed to eliminate overbuying and reduce food waste.

At the heart of the GE Profile Smart 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with Kitchen Assistant is a barcode scanner built into the outside of the refrigerator’s water and ice dispenser. When you run out of milk, eggs or any other item, simply scan the barcode and the fridge will automatically add it to your digital grocery list in the SmartHQ app, complete with brand, flavor and size.

Currently, the system recognizes more than four million products, and the shopping list can be shared with family members, referenced during in-store visits, or synced directly with Instacart for delivery. For items that do not have barcodes, users can add them through voice commands, entering text on the refrigerator screen, or via the app.

“We create intuitive experiences that feel natural and easy, turning the refrigerator into a true kitchen companion that evolves with families over time,” said Jason May, executive product manager for French Door Refrigeration at GE Appliances.

The camera allows you to check rations

The refrigerator also has FridgeFocus, a camera system built into the LED strip that takes instant photos of the drawers. Family members can check what’s in the refrigerator while shopping, which helps prevent repeat purchases.
