Apple expands the age rating system for applications. The company said on Thursday that it has updated the age assessment system to add 13+, 16+ and 18+ to the current list of 4+ and 9+ classifications, and remove the 12+ and 17+ age ranges. In addition, application developers will need to answer a new set of age classification questions to help identify sensitive content in their application. The developers will also be able to update the age assessments of their applications to one of the new options, if necessary.
The company says it automatically updated all applications and games through the application store to comply with the new system, available in beta versions of iOS 26, iPados 26, MacOS Tahoe 26, TVOS 26, Visionos 26, and Watchos 26.
As part of the updated system, developers will need to inform Apple about the application control and application capabilities, answer questions on medical and well -being topics, and to reveal whether their application or game contains violent topics. Apple will then calculate the appropriate age rating, which developers can display and amend in the App Store Connect connection.
Categories aim to provide more specific directives for parents about applications whose children want to download, and children will prevent installation of applications that exceed their age range. On the side of Apple, App Store will also not also display certain applications in areas such as editing stories, games, games marks and applications if they are not suitable for the child using the device.
Extensive age ranges are part of a wider update about Child safety initiatives announced earlier this year. For parents, Apple facilitates the creation of children’s accounts and the exchange of information about the ages of their children. This data will be shared with application developers to help provide suitable content for age. (Some changes in children’s accounts were provided for the first time in the 18.4 general experimental version, earlier this year.)
The application store products lists will also be updated to include more information to help direct guardian decisions on whether or not an application or game is appropriate. For example, the guardians will be informed if the application is characterized by content or ads created by the user, both of which can display young children to adult content. In addition, they will be informed if the application provides compact parent control items.
The increase in the classification of the age application can reduce and distribute clarity, which may encourage application developers to provide parental controls or other experiences appropriate for age.

Changes on the application store reach the growth of legislative disputes in both the state Federalism Levels on how to protect children online, with the progress of the United States New bills and laws This will require the application store operators to check the age of children to obtain parental approval to download the applications. Apple and Google prefers applications themselves with the process of determining age, but large technology companies such as Meta Ownership the pressure For application stores to verify.
Apple solution is a system that protects the child’s personal information, such as his date of birth, by providing an interface programming developer that allows them to access the age group information they need to customize their application experience appropriately. Since this information will be provided by the father during the preparation of a new device, it is more likely to be accurate than if children entered their birthday or era in the application directly, as children may lie around their age to reach the full application experience.
However, in order for this to succeed, developers will have to choose the integration with the new application programming interface.
