Anime fans, get excited about these 12 shows and movies coming soon


Anime Fans are in for a real treat as we head into the new year, now that several long-awaited new titles are starting to debut over the next couple of weeks. One show we’re looking forward to is Jujutsu Kaisen. In January, the third season of the series will depict a brutal battle royale — known as the Culling Game — that fans of the book series have been waiting to see on screen.

Also on our watch list is Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, a new feature film from Netflix directed by Shingo Yamashita, a thoroughly modern take on the ancient tale of the bamboo cutter. It’s a story that has been reimagined on film several times (most recently by… Studio Ghibli) But never quite like this.

While we are still dealing with the reality of that My hero academy It’s over for good, and we’re excited to get the premiere of Season 2 of the prequel series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, in January.

While you’ll find most of these new additions on Crunchyroll, you can also find some on other sites Streaming services Like Hulu and Netflix. Gege Akutami/Shueisha/Jujutsu Kaisen Project

Jujutsu Kaisen, Season 3 (January 8)

It’s been over two years since the last season of Jujutsu Kaisen aired, and finally, season 3 will premiere on January 8. The series is adapted from Gege Akutami’s hugely popular manga, which has a circulation of over 100 million copies, and follows high school student Yuji Itadori, whose body becomes a vessel for Ryomen Sukuna, a powerful Jujutsu sorcerer. This season is based on the Culling Game arc, a deadly battle royal between wizards and other curse users, and one of the most important events in the story. New episodes arrive at 12pm ET/9am PT Crunchyroll.

Spy x Family, Season 3

The newest season of this favorite comedy series premiered in October, and you can catch the Season 3 finale on Saturday, December 27 at 11 a.m. ET/8 a.m. PT on Crunchyroll or Holo. This season is on Spy × Family Send Loid on an infiltration mission inside a prestigious school to track down a target, encountering enemy threats along the way.

My Hero Academia: Watchmen, Season 2

Now that My Hero Academia is over for good (I’m not crying, you’re crying), at least we have My Hero Academia: Vigilantes to look forward to. The spinoff series, which takes place before the events of the main series, returns on January 5 for a second season. College student Koichi, who goes by the name The Crawler, returns to seek justice outside the law, along with fellow vigilantes Knuckleduster and Pop Step, as they face their toughest battles yet. Episodes will be broadcast on Crunchyroll.

Golden Kamui

The fifth and final season of the historical adventure series Golden Kamuy arrives on January 5. The series takes place in and around Hokkaido, and focuses on Saiichi Sugimoto, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War, who teams up with an Ainu girl named Asirpa to find a legendary cache of gold buried somewhere around the Ainu’s ancestral homeland. You can watch all four previous seasons of Golden Kamuy on Crunchyroll, but the feature film Golden Kamuy: Sapporo Beer Kōjō-hen, which canonically precedes this final season, was just released in theaters this fall and has not yet aired.

He rolls over and dies

Flom, the hero of Roll Over and Die, was given the “Reflect” ability, but unfortunately, this skill proved useless in battle. Eventually, after Flom is sold into slavery by a colleague, she realizes that she has two choices: to take the cursed sword that inevitably brings death to its bearer, or to be eaten by monsters. When she makes up her mind, she learns that her “reflexive” affinity might actually be useful after all. The first season of Roll Over and Die, based on the novel-turned-manga series, is scheduled to premiere on January 8.

Dark Moon: Blood Altar

You can’t go wrong with an anime series based around K-Pop bands. The real-life Enhypen members inspired this new series about seven young students at Decelis Academy. They are also vampires. Meanwhile, across town, their rivals (inspired by a Japanese pop group and crew), are werewolves. When new student Soha arrives in town, terrible things begin to happen, and secrets about the boys’ past are revealed. Dark Moon: The Blood Altar is coming to Crunchyroll on January 9 (time TBD).

Hell’s Paradise, Season 2 (January 11)

Set in Edo, Japan, Hell’s Paradise revolves around a ninja named Gabimaru who is on death row but seems immune to it. Realizing that he cannot be killed, his executioner, Yamada Asemon Sagiri, offers him the chance to be pardoned for his crimes if he can locate the Elixir of Life. The two are paired together as they travel to Shinsenkyo, a mythical world where the elixir allegedly exists, on a mission to find it. A new season of Hell’s Paradise premieres January 11 at 10:15 a.m. ET/7:15 a.m. PT.

Oshi no ku, season 3

While HiDive exclusively streamed Oshi no Ko for its first two seasons, Crunchyroll picked up the third season. Season 3 begins on January 14 and begins with B-Komachi, Aqua, and Akane all experiencing their professional success. Meanwhile, Ruby gets smart when she tries to figure out what really happened with Guru and Ai’s death (time TBA).

Love through prism

A Japanese student studying at the prestigious St. Thomas Academy of Art in London in the early 1900s finds herself infatuated with a talented young painter who falls in love through a prism. The more time the couple spends together, the more their relationship, which was initially a competitive artistic rivalry, develops into something more romantic. Written by Yoko Kamio, creator of Boys Over Flowers, the series consists of 20 episodes and will stream exclusively on Netflix starting January 15.

Freeze: Beyond Journey’s End, Season 2

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End takes place in a fantasy world where Frieren, a long-lived fairy sorceress, journeys to the resting place of spirits to reunite with her former companion Himmel, a human who has died of old age. Feeling guilty that she did not spend more time with Himmel before his death, Freren begins to bid Himmel a proper farewell, along with Vern, the orphan child Himmel had adopted. Season 2 of the series finds Frern on her way to Indy, where she must confront new threats to her new party. The new season will stream on Crunchyroll starting January 16.

Cosmic Princess Kaguya! (January 22)

Anime creator Shingo Yamashita, best known thus far for directing the opening sequences of popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura, makes his full-length debut with Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, which arrives on Netflix on January 22. The film is based on the Japanese folk tale The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, about a child named Kaguya-hime, sent from the moon to live on Earth, who is discovered inside a bamboo plant stalk. Here, the telephone pole is replaced with a bamboo stalk, and instead of being a princess, as in the original novel, Kaguya becomes a musician and internet celebrity. This modern adaptation features new, original music, 3D camera work, and Yamashita’s signature bold, gorgeous visuals.
