Cave exploration is terrifying to me without adding any monsters. Tight spaces, tons of stones pressing down, and true darkness that is impossible to see no matter where you look. Going underground can be deadly in itself, but one of my favorite horror movies made it even scarier for me.
When a group of friends go exploring a local cave system, they are prepared to face claustrophobia due to the tons of rocks pressing around them, but not the demonic monsters hiding within the dark tunnels.
Get down It is a horror film released in 2006 and you can watch it for free with a Prime Video subscription. A classic filled with hints of horror in every frame, this film has struck terror into the hearts of viewers for nearly 20 years.
I’ve been a fan of horror films since the 80s, starting with classics like Pumpkinhead. Over time, I’ve found some things that I always come back to, even when I know how it’s going to end. Descent is definitely one of them.
The Descent offers an experience full of fear and terror. If you don’t like tight spaces, even worse. Every time I watch it, the deadly disaster makes me cover my eyes and scream as events spin out of control.
The film begins at the conclusion of a whitewater rafting trip, where six women are bonding and having a good time. On the way home, the main character, Sarah, loses her husband and their daughter in a car accident that shatters her world. This tragedy sets the tone for the entire film, warning viewers that things are only going to get worse.
What starts as a fun adventure for friends soon turns into madness and horror.
One year after the fatal car accident, the six friends reunite for another adventure. Their plan is to spend a day caving in North Carolina’s cave system in the Appalachian Mountains. Things start out well, but then Sarah becomes stuck in a very narrow corridor. She managed to sneak out, but the rockslide behind her left all the women trapped deep underground with no idea how to get out.
One of the friends, Juno, then admitted that they were not in the specific cave system reported by local authorities, but instead in a section that had never been explored before. They are completely alone, with no hope of help.
As the women advance into the cave in search of a way out, they find old climbing equipment as well as a plaque that may indicate a way out. Holly, another member of the group, rushes forward at a traffic light, before falling into a ditch and breaking her leg. While the other women attend to her, Sarah looks around and sees a creature drinking from a puddle of water before noticing her and running off into the darkness.
The “Crawlers” in The Descent are terrifying creatures that live in dark spaces.
Then, things go from very bad to much worse. The women encounter a large room filled with animal bones and the creatures that feed on them. These pale, human-like monsters, which the women call “reptiles,” attack them ferociously in the dark while they fight back as best they can.
Holly, crippled by a broken leg, is the crawlers’ first victim, and is soon dragged into the darkness. In the ensuing chaos, Sarah is knocked unconscious, while Juno accidentally stabs her friend Beth in the neck. June escapes, but not before Beth snatches the necklace around her neck.
When Sarah regains consciousness, she sees a terrifying scene. The Reptiles fight over their friend’s body and realize the absolute bleakness of the situation. However, Sarah refuses to give up, and prepares to fight, ready to find her way back to the surface.
I won’t spoil the devastating third act. You’ll need to keep an eye on yourself to see if Juno and Sarah will survive the horrors of the tunnels and the creepers that inhabit them. At just under 100 minutes, this dark plunge into horror works great as part of a movie marathon or a quick weekend movie.
