Recursive Intelligence signs $410 computing deal with Amazon


On Tuesday, A.I Recursive superintelligence Announced a $400 million computing deal with Amazon Web Services. The company, which came out of secrecy in May with $650 million in funding, is focused on building open, self-improving systems, a potentially compute-intensive approach to AI research. This multi-year deal is intended to provide flexibility as the company looks to scale these systems.

Recursive’s $410 million outlay represents the bulk of the company’s fundraising to date — but in a call with TechCrunch, Sucher confirmed that he expects it to be the first of many similar deals. Today’s announcement “is likely to be one of the smallest computing deals we will sign in the next few years,” Sucher said.

Recursive’s focus on self-improving AI systems means that a significant portion of the budget that would traditionally go toward headcount and operations is put directly into the account, as the company seeks to automate its product development process.

“For us, it’s less about the number of employees and more about the number of agents,” Sucher said.

There is no investment component to Amazon’s participation, unlike major labs’ habit of hybrid investment arrangements. But the sheer size of the commitment allows AWS to devote significant resources to supporting Recursive’s unique needs, which may help attract other enterprise-level AI companies moving forward.

“Part of the agreement is that we will co-develop infrastructure specifically designed for these types of companies,” said Jason Bennett, vice president of startups and venture capital at AWS.

Recursive self-improvement (RSI) has long been viewed as an inflection point for AI, with some predicting an explosion in progress once AI can be improved without human intervention. But in the case of Recursive, the goal is to use the powers of the RSI to develop actual products – and Socher expects to launch the first examples before the end of the year.

“We’re passionate about building really amazing products that people can use, and you’ll see that in a few months, not a few quarters or years,” says Sucher. “In October or so, you’ll see some tangible, useful things that you’ll be able to play with.”
