The remake of Halo: Campaign Evolved is a reminder of what Xbox used to be like

It’s impossible to talk about a new Xbox game without also talking about the state of Xbox. Microsoft’s gaming division is in free fall: dominating recent headlines Large-scale layoffs, Your family studiosand Confusing strategiesmost of which stem from Years of bad decisions and expensive acquisitions. But it wasn’t always this way. During the first two generations of its existence, Xbox held its own against its more established rivals Nintendo and Sony, mainly because aura. Bungie’s shooter combined a big sci-fi story with nearly perfect action and single-handedly created a reason to buy an Xbox. Now, the game has gotten a complete remake, reimagining the same core experience for modern fans. In testimony to the original design, aura It’s still an exciting game more than two decades after its debut. But the remake is also a reminder of how far Xbox has strayed from its initial promise.

Named Hala: The campaign has evolvedThe remake is exactly what it sounds like: a modern overhaul of the original game’s story campaign. This means you still take on the role of super-soldier Master Chief as he leads human forces in a war against an alien alliance known as the Covenant, before eventually being drawn into a much larger conflict with the fate of the galaxy at stake. auraThe film’s story isn’t the most inventive ever, drawing on obvious influences, in particular Aliensbut it is well designed, with dramatic twists that give you an incentive to fight its many battles. The game is especially great at switching tones all the time. Starting aura It puts you on the front lines of a large-scale war on an alien world before later transitioning into something approaching horror, with tight shootouts against pesky monsters. The campaign has evolved It makes the story a more cinematic touch with extended scenes that flesh out the backstory and characters, but it’s still relatively short and concise.

The most notable difference in the remake is its upgraded visuals. The campaign has evolved Built using Unreal Engine 5, it feels like a first-person shooter from the year 2026. Everything is more detailed and the levels are larger in scope. When you’re out on the surface of Halo, you’ll truly feel like you’re in the middle of a massive battle, with explosions all around you and the wreckage of crashed vehicles and ships littering the landscape. This extra level of detail improves the game halfway through when you encounter the Flood, a race of parasitic aliens that turn corpses into zombies. Now those close quarters battles are even more terrifying, as aliens explode in horrific ways, walls are covered in oozing growth, and you see the flash of gunfire illuminate the dark spaces and horrors lurking within. You can quibble with some of the artistic decisions – I personally miss the original game’s more brutal, alien architecture – but overall the game looks great.

There are changes to the gameplay as well. Some are relatively small, like the new ability to hijack enemy vehicles or the larger arsenal of weapons at your disposal. But the biggest change is something It seems Small: Add enemy button. The early Halo games did not allow Master Chief to run around and add to The campaign has evolved It makes work feel much faster and more fluid. It’s especially useful if, like me, you spend a lot of time running away from larger enemies. The campaign has evolved It also introduces three new missions while making some changes to the existing missions. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind of encyclopedia aura Knowledge to determine exactly what changed, but I will say this: it’s very similar to a remake Giant’s shadow and Resident Evil 4, The campaign has evolved Plays the romantic version of aura From my memory, that’s exactly what you want from a project like this. The changes improve something that was already great and smooth over (most of) the rough spots. While you played it all solo, the game also supports co-op play for up to four players.

Although the remake is excellent, it is unfortunately launching at a very awkward time, just a few weeks after the launch of new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. The “reset” process has begun. This will eventually lead to more than 3,000 people being laid off over the next year and just like the famous studios death The Developer ID program has been significantly reduced. in many ways, aura As a franchise it illustrates Xbox’s fall from grace. Since Microsoft took full responsibility for the series through its in-house Halo Studios (formerly known as 343 Industries), the gap between new releases has become larger and larger, while at the same time the company has tried to expand its scope. aura Through often ill-fated projects such as A Broadcast TV series and Live service batch. The campaign has evolved It itself represents some of this disorder. Not only is it the first new one aura The game has been out since 2021, and is also coming to PS5 as well as Xbox and PC as part of Microsoft’s ever-confusing console exclusivity strategy.

So as much as I enjoyed fighting the Flood hordes again, I can’t help but see The campaign has evolved Within the larger context of Xbox. The original aura It felt bold, proved that action and narrative could be complementary forces, and went on to influence a generation of first-person shooters. In the years since, the franchise’s importance has steadily diminished, to the point where Microsoft is now trying to revitalize it by going back to the beginning rather than doing something truly new. Five years later Infinite aurarather than the next entry in the franchise, Xbox has opted to play it safe with a remake. and The campaign has evolved It comes at a time when the future of the Xbox lineup looks increasingly uncertain given the studio’s dramatic cutbacks.

The campaign has evolved It does a great job of recreating the gaming experience aura For the first time. But this is not enough to make aura — or Xbox, for that matter — seem as essential as ever.

Hala: The campaign has evolved It will be released on Xbox, PS5 and PC on July 28 Early access on July 23 for those who pre-ordered.
