Peak Design’s modular field brace has a built-in finder tag

I’m a very clumsy guy. So clumsy, that I attach AirTags to practically every camera I own. Did I leave my camera in an Uber? Yes. Did you leave it on the plane? Yes too. For me, finder tags are essential for my cameras.

The problem is that attaching a finder tag to a camera is always cumbersome. I currently hang up my camera straps like a phone mascot circa 2001. It’s ugly, and gets in the way a lot when I’m trying to focus on photography. But Peak Design believes it has a solution in its new Field Bracket system, which It launches today on Kickstarter, starting at $150 for early birds.

It’s designed for photographers and videographers who want to quickly switch between landscape and portrait orientation on their tripod, or sometimes want to mount a light or microphone on their camera when there’s no dedicated place to do so. But perhaps the most enticing thing, for me at least, is that the stand comes with a slot for a dedicated Finder tag.

Peak’s Beacon Finder is a Peak Design-branded search tool that works with Apple Find My and Google Find Hub. This means it will work with both Apple and Android phones, so you don’t have to worry about losing access to the camera finder if you switch ecosystems. The brand uses a standard CR2025 battery, and Peak says it’s rated to last up to 6 months. It’s also IP67 rated for water and dust resistance, and fits flush into the base plate of the L-shaped bracket.

The Beacon Finder Tag is just one of the accessories that Peak Design sells along with the Field Bracket. The basic product you’ll purchase is actually an L-mount, but once it’s on the camera, you’ll have access to other additional accessories like a hand grip, finger grip, and cheese plate. Peak says the Field Bracket will work with most ARCA-compatible tripods, and won’t get in the way if you use it with its capture clip or camera straps. In fact, the bracket itself has dedicated holes for attaching your Peak Design camera strap, so you won’t have to sacrifice the strap you own to use the bracket.

Peak calls the L-bracket’s vertical attachment the Field Latch, and uses the company’s new locking system to quickly attach and detach it without any tools. This is the same place where the optional cheese plate attaches, which pulls out into adjustable stops in case you need to access ports or connect cables from the camera.

Of course, you’ll have to choose the exact mount you want for the camera you own, keeping in mind that it’s molded specifically for that body. At launch, most supported cameras are the latest or near-newer models of each camera line. You can see the compatibility list here. The stand itself will have an MSRP of $149.95, and if you want a set of all the currently available accessories, you can get everything for $269.80. As always, Peak Design is offering a discount on Kickstarter, which puts the chip at $125 and the bundle at $199, while supplies last, at least.
