valve Claims The Steam machine can reach resolutions of up to 4K 120 Hz” on displays supported via HDMI 2.0 connections (although AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) Upscaling technology, rather than native resolution), but the Steam Machine Verified tag that will be applied to games on the Steam Store is based on the 1920 x 1080 standard.
It has been tested on 55 inches 4K OLED TV and 27 inches Desktop monitor 1080pBoth have 120Hz refresh rates, and both use HDMI. I used four games as references: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, The crimson desert, LEGO Batman: Dark Knight LegendsA Japanese RPG Granblue Fantasy Relink: Ragnarok Endless. Frame rates were tracked using the Steam Machine’s built-in display, and could be accessed by tapping the “…” button on the Steam Controller and activating the “Performance Overlay”.
on tv, Spider-Man The output resolution was defaulted to 2048 x 1152 but reached a smooth 60 frames per second (fps). Manually switching to 3840 x 2160 (full 4K) without activating AMD’s FSR and all graphics settings at “High” dropped performance to 30 to 45 fps. With FSR turned on and Dynamic Resolution Scaling set to a target of 60fps, the Steam Machine delivered, running at 4K resolution at the desired frame rate, without any noticeable image degradation. My TV with HDR also allows for improved colors and contrast. On a PC screen, the Steam Machine outputs a 1080p image at 60fps with ease, though the panel lacks HDR, so everything looked a bit washed out. Overall, this will be the best performing game ever.
The crimson desert Interesting – a notorious resource hog and not officially supported on the Steam Machine. However, it boots and loads just fine. With graphics quality set to the demanding “Ultra,” FSR turned on, and HD on “Native Anti-Aliasing,” it pushed a not-terribly 40fps…in the menus. In game, this dropped to 20 to 25 frames per second. Dropping the quality to “High” resulted in a slight improvement to 25 to 30 frames per second, but resulted in screen tearing during cutscenes.
Cutting the HD to “Quality” resulted in 30fps compression, and cutting further to “Balanced” improved the game for 60fps, but image quality began to suffer, especially with environmental details like foliage and water.
On the 1080p display, things were much better, delivering a solid 60fps even with settings on “Ultra” and advanced features like shadow ray tracing and advanced weather effects active. Still, not bad for a game that Valve says you can’t play on Steam Machine at all.
lego batman On the TV, at 4K with FSR turned on and graphics quality set to High (instead of Epic, which is its best setting), I saw wildly variable frame rates ranging from 15 to 45 frames per second. The FSR’s focus on performance got a reliable average of 45 fps, occasionally rising to 75 to 90 fps, but dropping below 30 fps for vehicle sections. On screen, at 1080p, with settings on High and cranked up to Ultra Performance, I finally got 60fps, but any attempts to improve image quality dropped it to around 30fps. However, getting good results was also a problem for the strong ones MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ gaming laptopwhich convinces me that the game is not well optimized on PC, and therefore the Steam Machine cannot handle poorly optimized games.
