Waze gets an AI makeover. Google is integrating its leading AI assistant, Gemini, into its driving app to allow users to further customize their trips.
Of the four new updates, only two are described as being Gemini-related. Waze says it’s updating its conversation reporting feature, It was first introduced in 2024to allow drivers to use conversational voice commands to report traffic incidents and suggest map updates, such as road closures or an old house number. Additionally, Waze introduced a destination search feature, allowing drivers to (again) use conversational voice commands (e.g., “Find a coffee shop open now” or “Find a nearby gas station with the lowest prices”) to find a destination.
This makes sense, given how much conversational voice interactions have improved with AI. As for its non-AI features, Waze allows users to adapt a “less chat” mode for voice prompts so drivers don’t have to sacrifice their music or listen to podcasts while using the app’s driving directions. Waze is also getting a Motorcycle mode that includes two-wheel shortcuts and more precise ETA for the best possible steering.
Finally, Waze will now suggest routes based on a user’s past trips and use its own data about local traffic patterns. So, if you prefer highways to local roads, Waze will make sure you see those routing options first.
So far, Google has been reluctant to give Waze a complete AI revamp. However, so was Google Maps Get more and More AI-powered capabilitiesas the tech giant appears to be exercising greater control over its main navigation tool.
