Phones from the British tech startup Nothing has ever failed to impress us with unique designs that set them apart amidst the plain landscape of similar-looking Android devices. The design of the 4B phone, which was not announced on Tuesday, alongside None Ear 3Ait’s not quite as distinctive as the company’s other phones, but at first glance, there’s still a lot to recommend it.
Let’s start with the battery. in Our review of the phone 4Awhich the company revealed back in March, one of the few criticisms we had of the device was that battery life could be better. The Phone 4B actually comes with the largest battery ever in any phone, at 5,200 mAh, although that model is much cheaper than the Phone 4A.
It’s still unlikely to compete with the best phones on the market in terms of battery life – Apple’s latest iPhones and the OnePlus 15. In our independent tests – But we are talking here about a budget phone. But it’s great to see nothing acknowledges that battery life is one area that needs improvement and takes action relatively quickly.
The design language of Nothing has always stopped at deploying transparent elements, and the 4B, despite being largely opaque, indicates this with a transparent camera bump on the upper back side of the phone. Below that notch is an improved version of the Glyph illuminated bar – a row of small, individually controlled LEDs that provide notifications, charging progress, recording indicators and personal alerts.
It’s touches like this that continue to set the Nothing apart from its competitors – especially at the budget phone end of the spectrum. There’s no cut in processor cost either, with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 4 chip inside. This is a model that has the processor inside the 4A removed, but nothing says the 4B comes close to its big brother in performance.
Again, like the 4A, the 4B offers a 50MP main camera and an 8MP ultra-wide camera, but it doesn’t have the 4A’s telephoto camera with optical zoom. Small compromises like this throughout the ‘nothing’ have allowed the price to be kept low, which for many people looking for an affordable yet fun phone, will be compromises worth making.
The Nothing Phone 4B will be available in black, white and blue from £299 (US$400), with sales happening in the company’s stores from July 11, before going on sale online on July 17.
