Google offers up a ton of Artificial intelligence toolsIf you are trying to learn more about something or study, LM notebook It might be your first thought. It’s powerful, more grounded in fact because it only uses the sources you provide it, and it can convert your sources into different outputs like podcasts and mind maps. But what if you don’t have resources on the topic you want to learn, or don’t need the bells and whistles of NotebookLM? Well, Google has an AI tool for this too. It’s called Get to Know.
Get to know It’s an AI experiment that does exactly what you think it does. It is a conversational learning tool that allows you to learn about new topics in a simple and easy way. As with NotebookLM, you can upload a document and Learn will break it down for you. Unlike NotebookLM, you can just type the topic you want to learn in the search box, and it will work. It’s not just the resources you provide.
The Insights output gives you a simplified list of different pieces of information. It almost has a Wikipedia feel to it. As you’d expect, you’ll get blocks of text with relevant information and images, but there will also be interactive menus you can click on for additional details. You’ll see sections to “build your vocabulary” around a specific topic. If it finds a related video on YouTube, it can also appear in the mix.
If you’re just starting to learn about a topic, you probably don’t know what you don’t know. Learn about this and it will also contain sections that ask questions you may not have thought to ask for deeper learning.
The Learn About feature can also expose common misconceptions about your topic. When trying out the tool, I wanted to learn more about the Sphinx, and it debunked the misconception that the Sphinx’s nose had been shot by Napoleon’s soldiers, correcting that it had likely been damaged centuries before Napoleon’s time. As with most of the information Learn About provides, it will also provide you with the sources from which you obtained this information.
At the bottom of each section, the Learn About option encourages deeper learning by offering three buttons to simplify the topic, go deeper, or view images.
Learn About displays all the information you might need in a simplified view.
To help you keep track of what you’ve learned, there’s a section on the left side of the screen that shows you the “big picture” of your topic, but also all the items you’ve clicked on within the interactive menus it’s provided, so you can dive back in if you need a refresher. From my time with it, this was the only item that appeared in this section while I clicked on it.
Those of you who are looking for a dedicated information recognition app may feel a little disappointed, but you shouldn’t be. Unlike NotebookLM, Learn About is about consuming the content it provides rather than creating something new, like a file Video overview From your sources. It’s easily accessible via a mobile browser, and can be well adapted to smaller displays.
In both Chrome and Brave, Learn About indicates that the experience is not supported on tablets
Just like almost everything Google does, your chat history should be stored for easy access when you return, but that wasn’t the case when I tried to access a Sphinx conversation from my phone. When I refreshed the page on my computer browser, the conversation ended. Although this is frustrating, this is still an experience so far. Another limitation I encountered was when trying to access Learn More from my iPad Pro. In both Chrome and Brave, I was greeted with a pop-up saying that Learn is not currently supported on tablets, but that wasn’t the case when I tried it on Safari.
Despite the issues I encountered, there’s a lot to like about Learn More. It’s not overly complicated, and it doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t. It’s a simple way to learn topics through conversation, which can be great for students or anyone interested in understanding something new.
