Lexi Minetree takes over the role originated by Reese Witherspoon in the films. Also arriving on the platform this month is the crime comedy Ride or Die, a series about two best friends (Hannah Waddingham and Octavia Spencer) whose relationship is shaken when one learns that the other is a killer. The new true crime documentary series Murder 101 and a new season of Batman: Caped Crusader will also be released this month, and Prime Video is the new streaming home for Gilmore Girlsalso.
Here’s a look at what we’re most excited about for Prime Video in July.
July 1
Lexi Minetree plays young Elle Woods in the prequel series Legally Blonde Elle, arriving July 1. The series is produced by Reese Witherspoon, creator of the role, who helped develop the project with production company Hello Sunshine. She stated that she was inspired by the success of the Netflix series Wednesday, which shows the popular character in a high school setting. Set six years before the events of the first Legally Blonde film, Elle takes place at Woods High School in Seattle, before she sets her sights on Harvard.
Gilmore Girls has been a mainstay on Netflix for years, but the show was removed from that platform in June and found a new home on Prime Video. You can now watch all seven seasons of the series, starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as the titular mother-daughter duo, and all of their quirky neighbors in Stars Hollow, Connecticut, starting July 1.
July 7
Shirow Masamune’s legendary manga, Ghost in the Shell, was released in 1989 and has since been adapted for the screen numerous times as an anime series, multiple animated films, a live-action film starring Scarlett Johansson and more. The story is now being adapted again for Prime Video’s new original animated series The Ghost in the Shell, from the Science SARU animation studio known for shows like Dandadan, the Inu-Oh films, and The Colors Inside. The new series arrives on July 7.
July 13
If you’re a true crime fan, the three-episode Murder 101 series will thrill you when it arrives in July. Based on the hit true crime podcast of the same name, the series focuses on a high school sociology class and their teacher Alex Campbell, as they investigate a series of unsolved murders from decades ago. What started as a class project eventually turned into a real investigation as these students uncovered new leads and helped close the victims’ file. All three episodes of the series will be available on Prime Video on July 13.
July 15
We’ve already seen the movie where the husband or wife was a secret killer dealing with the consequences of their old jobs (Nobody, Back to Work, The Family Plan). But Prime Video’s new series Ride or Die begs the question, what if your best friend was a killer and you never knew? In the action comedy series, Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham play best friends Deb and Judith, whose lives are turned upside down when Deb discovers that Judith is killing people like her. job. And now some very bad people are looking for both. All eight episodes arrive on July 15.
July 17
In the new documentary series Young Farts Trailer Parts, Canadian brothers Jagger and Dawson Glowatsky do their best to build an empire by buying up dilapidated RVs, cashing in on salvaged treasures and turning unwanted junk into a profitable business. The comedy reality series features the two brothers who originally started on TikTok and became famous for their ass-like antics and schemes.
July 31
Batman: Caped Crusader is a 1940s animated show produced by JJ Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm, offering a stylized noir take on Batman’s story. The second season of the series arrives on July 31 and features the voices of Hamish Linklater as Batman, and the season promises plenty of old Batman foes, including the Joker, Edward Nygma/Riddler, the Scarecrow, and a gender-swapped version of the Mad Hatter.
Date TBD
The Devil’s Mouth is a shark thriller starring Kathryn Newton, Gavin Casalegno, and Lana Condor as college friends who take a trip to Thailand. But tension and horror arise when they get stuck in an underwater cave system with a bull shark. I should have just gotten Eurail tickets! (Although this could always end up in a hostel situation. College travelers aren’t really safe anywhere, are they?)
The film arrives on Prime Video this month, though the streamer has yet to confirm a release date.
