My favorite Kindle alternative is $30 off after the recent price increase

If you’re not heavily invested in the Amazon ecosystem, I think you’re better off buying the Kobo Libra Color than its closest Amazon competitor. $249.99 Kindle Colorsoft. It offers many of the same basic features, including a sharp 7-inch color display that makes book covers, comics, and highlights pop with slightly less vibrancy than the Kindle’s color. It’s also waterproof so you can get comfortable at the beach, and features an adjustable warm light for more comfortable nighttime reading.

Kobo also has some advantages over Amazon’s e-reader. It supports EPUB and a wide range of file formats, making it easy to read books from a variety of sources, while providing double the storage space (32GB). Unlike the Colorsoft, the Libra Color includes physical buttons for turning pages, which I find provides a more intuitive reading experience. It also supports Kobo’s optional Stylus 2, letting you annotate eBooks, take handwritten notes, use built-in notebook templates, and even convert your handwriting to typed text. Given its size, I wouldn’t recommend it as a dedicated digital notebook over something larger like the Kobo Elipsa 2E or Kindle Scribe, but it’s much more practical for taking quick notes than using your phone. It also works with Instapaper, making it easy to save web articles for offline reading.
