NTSB launches investigation into fatal Tesla crash in Texas

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has open An investigation into a crash that occurred over the weekend in Texas, where a driver crashed into a home in Katy, Texas, killing one resident.

The family of that victim, 76-year-old Martha Avila, also filed a lawsuit against driver Michael Butler and Tesla, alleging negligence.

The NTSB is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in investigating the crash. While Butler allegedly told local authorities that he was using Tesla’s Autopilot feature before the crash, the company has since said it has data showing that the accelerator pedal in Butler’s car was pressed to the floor. This “overran” what was likely his car’s full self-driving software, raising his speed to 73 mph before he reached home, according to Tesla.

However, Tesla did not provide other evidence beyond those statements. The NTSB and NHTSA investigations will likely require the company to turn over records generated by the vehicle’s on-board computers that will ultimately reveal exactly how the accident occurred.
