Horror is having a moment. In 2026, this type is particularly well represented: New blood dominates the box office through films like Back rooms and maniafixed names such as Sam Al-Raimi and Damien McCarthy They are at the top of their game, and long-standing franchises like After 28 years and Vampire Continue to stay relevant. But this year’s most impressive piece of horror may be found in the world of TV comedy: Widow’s Baya series that manages the delicate balance between blending horror and laughs, while also doubling as a loving tribute to the genre. It’s the kind of combination that doesn’t work often, and it’s part of what makes the show so great.
Widow’s Bay Just finished his first season – The second has already been confirmed – and it tells a story that, at first glance, seems incredibly derivative. The film takes place on an isolated island in New England, which has a sordid history due to what the locals believe to be a curse. In the first episode, a terrifying fog shrouds the city, indicating that a powerful evil is awakening once again. Cue the Stephen King comparisons.
But it wasn’t long before that Widow’s BayThe distinct brand of horror/comedy is self-explanatory. The show largely centers around the island’s down-on-his-luck mayor, Tom (Matthew Rhys), who has a misguided desire to turn Widow’s Bay into a tourist destination that can rival Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. This, of course, goes against the whole damn thing. The coming fog is just the first sign that things will not go well for him and his plan, though Tom ignores the signs at every opportunity.
What makes the show successful is that at its core it’s just a really tense, scary story. From the first episode, when Tom was worried about a visiting travel writer from… New York Timesthere is a growing sense of dread: a tour through the island’s history, filled with stories of death and, uh, cannibalism; A calendar about wolves also for some reason contains pictures of car accidents; The ferry captain who simply says “bad things happen here.” The show makes you feel as uncomfortable as the islanders.
This feeling grows over the course of the season, as each episode explores a different kind of horror while drawing on the lore of the cursed island. The second episode takes place in an obviously haunted hotel, with a killer clown; Later, a satanic party planning book leads to a terrifying and unsettling gathering on the beach. Tom’s assistant, Patricia (Kate O’Flynn), is stalked by a nefarious Jason Voorhees-style villain, and there’s a mysteriously inventive sequence of a series of drug trips, complete with jarring time skips.
This is because it is a well-crafted horror story that has comedy in it Widow’s Bay Hits hard. It’s not the easiest combination, says creator and showrunner Katie Dippold – Who knows anything about how good funny horror can be — he told me before the show’s April premiere. “It can be a great mix, but it can also be a bad mix,” she explained, noting that projects that successfully blend the two genres are “few and far between.” As if to prove her point, New Scary movie This month’s release was completely toothless.
But unlike the overt attempts to combine horror with comedy, most of the gags are there Widow’s Bay Relatively subtle – and scary in its own way. When Tom is looking for a set of board games at the local inn, he finds one called simply teeth; Inside, there is nothing but a pair of pliers. When Patricia finally kills the “bogeyman” who has been stalking her, she keeps her gun trained on his corpse at all times – from the ambulance to the cremation – just in case. Even episode titles can be funny. The final episode, where almost everything goes wrong, is called “We Hope You Enjoy!”
This means that the jokes not only fit the scary nature of the world, but they actually make it even scarier. This was the goal all along. “I never wanted to have a moment where something scary happens and the characters don’t react honestly,” Dippold told me. “If you’re honest, you’ll find comedy in the end. That was the very difficult rule.”
This all comes to a head as the show concludes its first season. Before the end, Tom is put in an impossible situation, forced to choose between killing his incompetent secretary Ruth (K Callan) in order to end the curse once and for all, or wiping out the island by not acting. In the final episode, with the townspeople and tourists stuck in a shelter due to a devastating storm, Tom finds himself at Ruth’s house, and it’s truly painful to watch him try to figure out the right path. But amid all the tension, there are still some funny bits, like Ruth casually remarking that her old friend “got bitten by an animal and became that animal,” or a cheerful educational video about ritual sacrifice. And this object Widow’s BayThings are more complicated than they seem, leaving Tom with an even more difficult task.
You just don’t have to take my word for it. Guillermo del Toro Recently called this series “Delivers one of the most engaging narrative pieces in horror.” That’s some praise. But this is the truth Widow’s Bay She managed to claim her own distinct path at such a busy moment. The final title turned out to be incredibly accurate: I actually had a good time.
The first season of Widow’s Bay It’s now streaming on Apple TV.
