Nearly three years after launching as a competitor to Twitter (now X), Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, the company announced Tuesday. The Meta-owned social platform also announced a series of new features launching today, including a “Your Algo” tool that lets users control what they see in their feed.
The new Your Algo feature is based on “Dear nothing“Launched in February, the tool allows users to tell topics what they want to see more or less in their feed by publishing a public post like, ‘Dear Algo, show me more posts about your podcast.’” With the new Your Algo feature, users can privately control what they see in their feed without having to share a public post.
You can tell topics that you want to see more or fewer specific topics and choose how long the request will last: one, three, or seven days. You can only see orders.
Your Algo launches today in the US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand.

By allowing users to temporarily influence what appears in their feeds, Threads gains an advantage over X and other competitors by offering a feature not available on competing platforms.
Threads is also taking Communities out of beta and adding new requested features to them. It was launched last year As a way to get around Now, users will be able to find communities through the new Communities Hub. Additionally, communities now have their own distinct icons to make them easier to discover and recognize.
“Discovery Hub is a way for us to try to get communities in front of more people,” Threads president Connor Hayes told TechCrunch. “We’ve noticed that when people use the app for a clear purpose and they find their people in the app quickly, it’s just a better experience for them. One of the challenges they’ve faced since we launched this feature over the last year is that it’s hard to organically find communities that interest you sometimes. So, Discovery Hub is a big challenge.”

Threads also announced that it is expanding live chats to include more communities along with the ability to co-host chats and quote moments in your feed. Launched in April, Live chats Allowing real-time conversations during cultural events such as the FIFA World Cup. By July, all communities will be able to start live conversations.
“One of the positive comments we get from a lot of people about Threads is that they appreciate the quietness of the app in a world where a lot of social media is video-centric and loud. So these live chats have been a great second-screen companion experience for people who are watching things, but want to follow up with comments while they’re doing it,” Hayes said.
Expanding live chats will help Threads close the gap with X when it comes to real-time conversations. Unlike X, which had long served as the global “town square” for breaking news and live events, Threads lagged behind However, it has added these features over time, and is now looking to better compete with X by adding a feature that even the Elon Musk-owned app doesn’t have.
Regarding the new MAU event, it shows that Threads has managed to add 100 million users per month in the past 10 months, as the company said in August 2025 that it had obtained 400 million monthly active users.
Threads’ growth comes at a time when the platform has shipped many new features over the past year, such as Direct messages, Ghost posts, Desktop messagesAnd more.
