The robotaxi operator has announced a new premium tier for $29.99 per month for passengers who want a more exclusive self-driving experience. The invitation-only membership service targets Waymo customers who use the service most often, offering them a number of perks, including priority on transfers, 10 percent cash back on every ride, early access to robo-taxis in new cities, and up to five free cancellations per month.
Waymo Premier will initially be offered to select riders in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix, the company said. The program will expand to include new cities as Waymo continues to expand; The company said it expects to be operating in 20 cities by the end of 2026. Waymo Premier members will be able to use their benefits in any of the 10 cities in which Waymo currently operates.
Waymo surveyed its existing users about a potential subscription service. Driverless summaryHarry Campbell I got a survey asking about a potential Waymo membership program, with potential perks like cash back and discounts on future taxi rides. I asked the company about monthly plans that cost between $9.99 and $29.99. They seem to have settled on the latter.
As Campbell noted, with a small but enthusiastic customer base, it makes sense for Waymo to try to maintain the loyalty of its fans, especially as it looks to grow into new markets. However, it’s hard not to wonder if the company is jumping the gun by offering a membership program while it’s only operating in 10 cities. And unlike UberWaymo doesn’t have a food delivery company to whet the appetite.
Granted, Waymo has always been a bit of a premium transportation experience. The cars are luxury SUVs from Jaguar, which will soon be supplemented by minibuses made by Zyker. In addition to the luxury of an empty car, the company’s prices have traditionally been about 30 to 40 percent higher than human-powered services like Uber and Lyft. In recent months, Waymo has reduced its prices, so they are now 12 to 13 percent more expensive than human transportation, according to Recent analysis of Obia company that aggregates real-time rates and pickup times for multiple transportation services.
Waymo executives frame it this way, too. “When you talk about economics, we provide premium service,” said co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana He said Bloomberg In 2024. “People pay for consistency, Waymo driver safety, and Waymo service.”
It may be a bit early in its history to be a niche company, but Waymo clearly has its sights set on mainstream success. They also need to identify additional sources of revenue as expansion costs continue to grow. Earlier this year, the company Raised $16 billion In a financing round led by Dragoneer Investment Group, Crossover company. He is known for investing in new technology companies before they go public. Waymo Premier would certainly signal to investors that the company is serious about targeting its most loyal customers.
