A24 has emerged as one of the most innovative production companies in recent years. While the films it produces span all genres – horror, documentary, comedy and more – the entertainment house has become synonymous with a particular aesthetic.
The company has attracted individual filmmakers such as Sofia Coppola, Ari Aster, Yorgos Lanthimos and Barry Jenkins, who have helped define the company’s creative ethos to the point where the film is often easily recognizable as an A24 production. And her films aren’t just underground hits, either. Many of them, such as Minari, The Zone of Interest, and Everywhere Everywhere All at One, also won Oscars.

Directed by Josh and Benny Safdie, Uncut Gems stars Adam Sandler as Howard Ratner, a jeweler and gambling addict who owes money to his brother-in-law and needs to auction off a precious black opal to pay off his loan. Over the course of a harrowing few days, Howard loaned the Opals to Boston Celtics player Kevin Garnett (who appears as himself). The ballplayer then goes off with the jewel, leading Howard on a wild goose chase to get it back and try to cash in on his loan, while also falling deeper into debt as he makes other risky bets.
Brendan Fraser won an Academy Award for his performance in The Whale, a 2022 film directed by Darren Aronofsky. The film revolves around an obese English teacher who tries to spend time with his estranged teenage daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink), by bribing her with a huge amount of money he has saved. The emotional drama also earned Hong Zhao an Academy Award nomination for her supporting role.
Minari is a semi-autobiographical story based on director Lee Isaac Chung’s upbringing. Nominated for six Academy Awards, the film tells the story of a family of South Korean immigrants who move from California to Arkansas during the 1980s. Yoon Yuh-jung won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Soon-ja, the family matriarch who immigrated from South Korea to live with the family. The film co-starred Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, and Alan Kim.
The 2022 drama Aftersun stars Paul Mescal as Callum, the young father of an 11-year-old girl named Sophie (Frankie Corio). The two vacation at a Turkish beach resort together, and the film is a poignant and beautiful personal study of their relationship and a reflection of their fleeting shared moments together. We later see the adult Sophie watching the camcorder footage she shot, and reconnecting with memories of her past. The critically acclaimed film is available on Pluto, Tubi and Plex.
The Disaster Artist stars brothers James and Dave Franco as real-life actors Tommy Wiseau and Greg Sestero, who starred together in the 2003 film The Room. The film chronicles their friendship and the disastrous production of the film that many consider the worst ever made. A slew of A-list stars appear in cameo roles, including Kristen Bell, JJ Abrams, and Adam Scott, and the supporting cast also includes Alison Brie, Ari Graynor, Josh Hutcherson, Jacki Weaver, and Seth Rogen. James Franco directed the film, which was based on a book co-written by Cicero.

Swiss Army Man is the feature film debut of directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan (collectively known as Daniels), who wrote and directed the Academy Award-winning Everything Everywhere All At One. The surreal black comedy film stars Daniel Radcliffe as the corpse of a man named Manny, and Paul Dano as Hank, a man stranded on a deserted island who uses Manny’s body to help get him off the island. Completely bizarre and entirely original, the film is a major departure from Radcliffe’s Harry Potter character, and ultimately a story of friendship between a man and a very bloated corpse who helps him find his way home.
Before teaming up with Emma Stone for their fruitful film partnership, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos directed the 2017 thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer starring Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman. In the film, the stars play a married couple, Stephen and Anna, who take in a teenager named Martin (Barry Keoghan) who has evil intentions of breaking up their family to get revenge on Stephen for something he did in his past.
