Do you really need to pay for transcription software?

This is definitely more work than just setting up Wispr Flow. When you’re done, you’ll have an app that works without a monthly subscription. I recommend trying it.

A few other free alternatives

As I said before: AI and MBA transcription are widely available technologies. It should come as no surprise then that there are many Wispr Flow alternatives currently available.

For Mac users, the source is completely free and open Macparaket It is a great choice. It is open source and completely free to download and use without an account. There is also no increase in application. Transcription is handled using local models, either Parakeet or Whisper, and a variety of LLMs – both local and online – are supported for the formatting step. This is the closest completely free implementation I’ve found to Wispr Flow.

Sonic inkanother Mac-only option, is open source and free to use if you download the code from GitHub and compile it yourself. Otherwise, the app is a one-time cost of $25, after which you can use all the features without any ongoing payments. Note that the format step for this requires an API key from a service like Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI, or Claude.

Windows and Linux users should consider this Vos Vokelwhich is completely free and open source software (hence FOSS), and works offline. It doesn’t offer a formatting step, which is disappointing, but I’m including it because it’s the best free option for Windows and Linux I’ve found without any annoying upsell.

Windows users and Mac users who don’t like the above options for whatever reason have another option: Open Whispr. This open source tool does not require an account (but you will have to find a small “Continue without account” button). The app offers a subscription, but you can choose to set up local forms and external API keys instead to avoid paying.

Do you really need to type with your voice?

Wispr Flow has its pros. It’s easy to configure, for one thing, and has a consistent user interface. I can understand why someone might choose to pay for a subscription. But if money is tight right now, there are free options available.

I’ve enjoyed exploring this growing field, but I’ll stick to the keyboard. Wispr Flow and apps like it promise to let you type at the speed of thinking, but I type faster than I think. If I can be philosophical for a moment, so can writing how I think. Writing a sentence, looking at it, and improving it isn’t an annoying part of the writing process; He is Writing process. Often times I don’t know what I think about something until I take the time to refine my thoughts. I can’t help but feel that a lot of that would be lost if I just talked to my computer instead of writing.

But every mind is different, and these tools may work well for you. That’s why I’m glad there are so many options available.
