SpaceX is headed toward what is expected to be the largest initial public offering ever next month, and has now received a major boost from the Trump administration.
On Friday, the US Space Force Announce It is giving SpaceX $4.16 billion as part of a contract to build satellites that will be part of the air and missile defense system that President Trump calls “Golden Dome.”
The announcement comes after a separate contract awarded by Space Force to Elon Musk earlier this week worth $2.29 billion. This contract involves SpaceX building a communications network in low Earth orbit.
The contracts reinforce a revelation detailed in SpaceX’s IPO filing announced last week: The company relies heavily on government contracts. A fifth of SpaceX’s revenue in 2025 came from government agencies.
Musk spent about $300 million to help elect Trump, and has remained close to the president. But SpaceX has also dominated the launch market over the past decade; It’s no surprise that the federal government continues to turn to SpaceX for contracts like this. However, the company warned investors in its IPO filing that its “business with government entities is subject to changes in policies, priorities, regulations, mandates and rules.”
