Amazon Basics It offers its Dutch oven in several different sizes and colors for a fraction of the cost of Le Creuset. Certain sizes and colors of Amazon Basics start as low as around $40 and top out at around $60, a savings of over $200 no matter which spec you choose.

Le Creuset clearly wins in the color, size, and warranty departments, though it’s unclear why a product containing the same materials wouldn’t be dishwasher safe. However, we’ll take their word for it and tick that box for Le Creuset as well. Other than that, in terms of functionality, they are made of the same materials and are oven safe at the same temperature.

The handle styles also appear identical. There’s a claim on the Le Creuset website that it’s “the lightest quart cast iron on the market,” but I couldn’t find an exact weight to prove that. The Amazon 6-Qt Dutch Oven weighs about 13 pounds.

Although Amazon Basics doesn’t come in as many colors as Le Creuset, the blue model I chose still has attractive, sturdy features with a nice finish. (Though, it must be said that there’s something so iconic about the unmistakable Le Creuset branded lids that it might really be a factor for something that might live permanently on the stove.)

I’ve tried my Amazon Basics model with a number of browned and braised dishes, including braised pork shoulder and braised beef short ribs, to very satisfying results. Fond — the caramelized bits of protein that stick to the bottom of the bowl and add to the flavor of the dish — tends to look quite dark; However, I understand that this is often the case with light-colored cooktops and is less noticeable on dark cast iron surfaces. If you’re on the fence, consider the potential benefit and length of purchase. If you or your intended Dutch oven recipient is already a serious cook with culinary and personal aspirations that might lead to passing the pot down to a future generation, you’re unlikely to be disappointed, no matter its cost, especially in light of its generous warranty.

If you’re just starting out, a number of less expensive Dutch oven models, including Amazon Basics, are likely a safer option in the short term, and my own experiences have shown that one of the cheaper models can deliver results, at least in the short term.
