The Zuckerberg family hires a lifeguard but they call him a “beach person.”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are hiring a seasonal, on-call “beach water person” based in Kauai, Hawaii, where the family owns Sprawling complexaccording to a list of new jobs associated with Greenhouse West 10Zuckerberg family office.

This is an interesting choice of job title, because according to the job description, the primary duties of a Beach Water Person include serving as a “Beach Lifeguard” and a “Pool Lifeguard.” In other words, to be a savior.

The job listing lists some additional duties related to water activities, such as instruction in stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, snorkeling, and other ocean-based activities. However, these come after water safety duties in the job description.

This position could easily have been called “Pool/Beach Lifeguard,” or simply “Lifeguard.” For the sake of comprehensiveness, “pool/beach lifeguard and boat attendant” could also have been used. Instead, the Zuckerbergs could have opted for “beach/pool escort,” which is roughly the job title synonym With a lifeguard it could reasonably be interpreted to include additional duties associated with recreation, such as taking care of the boat or teaching people how to stand on a paddleboard.

Arguably, any of these options would have provided greater clarity than the “beach water person” who Doesn’t appear To match the job title elsewhere in the English-speaking world.

WIRED did not immediately receive a response from representatives of Zuckerberg’s family. Since we didn’t have a human to talk to, we decided to ask Meta’s chatbot “What is a ‘person who lives at the beach’?”

“‘Beach water person’ just means someone who likes to be in or near the ocean,” the chatbot said. “The word for this is thalassophile – ‘one who loves the seas and oceans’.” Good!
