Google may limit new Gmail accounts to only 5GB of free storage space


Google may reduce free storage space for new Gmail accounts from 15 GB to 5 GB According to a report by Android Authority. Those who want to upgrade storage from these 5GB accounts will need to provide a phone number to Google to unlock the additional gigabytes.

A Google representative confirmed that it is trying new account options.

“We are testing a new storage policy for new accounts created in select regions that will help us continue to provide high-quality storage service to our users, while encouraging users to improve their account security and data recovery,” the representative said in a statement to CNET.

It is unclear whether the regions where this is being tested include the United States. The Android Authority reported that accounts with only 5GB of storage were primarily in African countries.
