Sony announced the new flagship high-resolution camera A7R VI. The standout feature is the fully stacked 66.8MP full frame sensor and up to 16 stops of dynamic range. That’s an increase of only about six megapixels for the VI model, but its stacked architecture means much faster readout speeds for higher burst rates, better silent shooting with the electronic shutter, and improved video performance. The other increase is related to price, as the A7R VI will cost $4,499.99 when it launches in June – $600 more than when the A7R V launched in 2022.
The new A7R has a large number of new features and those inherited from other Alpha models. The A7R V debuts Sony’s AI-based autofocus system, and the VI is said to have improved it with real-time recognition AF+. There’s also a new 9.44 million dot OLED viewfinder, similar to the one on the A1 II, and backlighting for the camera buttons. Grip design (one I’ve done it often sigh) is slightly larger to accommodate a new, higher capacity battery.
The new battery represents a big change for Sony photographers, who have been using the Alpha NP-FZ100 cameras for years. And if you’re like me, you probably own a bunch of them, but unfortunately the A7R VI is not backward compatible. The new NP-SA100 battery promises up to 710 shots per charge in the A7R VI. It has a capacity of 2,670 mAh compared to the old battery’s capacity of 2,280 mAh (17 percent increase).
The A7R VI’s superimposed sensor and new Bionz XR2 processor enable uninterrupted continuous shooting at up to 30 fps. For video, it can record 8K at the full sensor width (no crop) at up to 30p, and runs for up to two hours straight thanks to heat management. It can also record 4K at up to 120p resolution, also without any cropping. High-resolution cameras aren’t usually the best choice for video, but the new sensor makes the A7R VI even more versatile. It is also the first Sony Alpha camera to support dual shooting to reduce noise and reduce the loss of shadow detail.
The A7R VI also takes advantage of other features from recent Sony Alpha cameras, including in-body image stabilization up to 8.5 stops and dual USB-C ports for charging and data.
As usual for a high-end Sony Alpha, there’s a lot going on. You’re also paying a lot, especially if you have to reinvest in new things Batteries are $120. But the price increase over the A7R V’s original debut price isn’t far from an outright price jump for Sony’s flagship phone. A1 Second and A9 III Bodies received last year – most likely from US customs duties. These models cost around $7,000, so by comparison, the A7R VI is a better offering if you’re a general-purpose, portrait, or nature photographer who values resolution more than anything else.
