what do you Love about coffee? Is it the caffeine boost in the morning, the creamy sweetness of a cappuccino or latte, the bucket of filter coffee you can sip throughout the day, or the quick kick of a good espresso? Or is it a Zen-like ritual in every way, the measuring of grains and the precision of the perfect extraction? The good thing is that Much better for you From what science previously realized.
If you believe the marketing hype, you can have it all, thanks to the best Fully automatic coffee machines. These small-scale cafés promise to serve up an extensive menu of drinks at the touch of a button, all without requiring the finesse of a barista. But are the drinks actually that good?
WIRED tests a lot of Coffee machines— Productivity will cease if we stop. But for this blind group test, we wanted to see what coffee professionals thought of drinks produced by the “best” fully automatic machines, uninfluenced by any fancy design or brand awareness. We’re not judging here how easy the device is to use, the app interface (there’s always an app), or how easy it is to clean. We just want to know about Joe.
By the end of our experience, it was clear that while money can buy you endless options and push-button convenience, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee barista-quality coffee at home.
Adam Cousins is the co-founder of Blenders are funa UK specialty coffee brand from East London with its dense and densely populated café population. He was joined by his manager and coffee enthusiast Callum Hunt at WIRED’s test café. Launched in 2015 from a three-wheeled coffee van, it now has several cafés and over 100 retail partners across the UK.
For this test, choose Forest mix The beans, famous for their dark chocolate, molasses, and walnuts, have a creamy texture, low acidity, and a lingering sweet finish. Most importantly, Cozens and Hunt implicitly know what Forest Blend beans should taste like, and are perfectly placed to determine which of our machines produces the best coffee with the most subtle flavor from the beans served.
Each of the machines we selected is a giant, fully automatic coffee-to-cup machine capable of producing up to 50 types of coffee drinks at the push of a button; Everything from espresso and cortado to iced latte with syrup or a simple long black.
WIRED chose a latte — the most popular type of coffee made with steamed milk in America — and classic espresso for a blind taste test. A latte allows us to test the mechanics of heating the milk, frothing, and steaming, while an espresso reveals any weaknesses in extraction and coffee flavour. Per Cozens’ instructions, we used organic whole milk.
Our experts were blindfolded and then served one latte and one espresso from each machine. Machines labeled A, B, C, and D were visible to testers, but they had no idea what type of coffee it came from. They then evaluated each drink based on appearance, steaming quality of milk, crema (the golden aromatic foam on top of espresso), temperature, extraction and flavour. The coffees were then ranked from best to worst.
To reiterate, this is not a test of the device’s ease of use, desirability, or features. Every aspect of every recipe can be tweaked in every build, but we’re not convinced the average buyer will want to delve into the settings. These are advanced push-button machines designed to eliminate the mess while making good coffee at home – anything for an easy life.
