Did Microsoft just tease a new Xbox UI?

Microsoft showcased a “consistent” Xbox UI across mobile devices, consoles and cloud gaming during its launch Xbox Master At the Game Developers Conference in March. At the time, it was difficult to tell if there was anything new about the UI from the videos and photos taken during the event, but Microsoft has now given us a closer look at it thanks to a… New video From the keynote posted earlier today.

Jason Ronald, Vice President of Next Generation at Xbox, reviewed the UI while stating that players noticed “a lot of fragmentation within the experience” across devices, and a general lack of consistency. “What the team has been doing behind the scenes is putting a lot of work into delivering a consistent experience, so the Xbox game feels very familiar and very distinct no matter where you choose to play it,” says Ronald.

At first glance, the user interface, shown above, doesn’t look very different from what exists today, but there are some subtle differences across different devices. The Xbox console’s home screen is a little different, with a user profile at the top right and three advertising slots at the bottom instead of the usual four. The same interface can be found on the mobile device in the image, but the PC app on the right side looks very similar to the new Xbox Cloud Gaming interface.

When Microsoft first started testing the new Xbox Cloud Gaming UI, I wrote that it was more like a console More than ever, thanks to a variety of new animations, a new library section, and a carousel design. Microsoft’s slide indicates that this same interface may be coming to the Xbox PC app. The UI won’t be identical across all Xbox consoles, Ronald says, “because we’re thinking about things like screen size, or things like input methods.”

Later in the Xbox game developer update video, Microsoft also shows off what looks like the new Xbox Store on Windows. I asked Microsoft about the new Xbox UI and Store changes, but the company declined to comment.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in Ronald’s full GDC keynote, I recommend watching it below. Microsoft’s full Xbox game update video is about 90 minutes long, but the embed below will start at Ronald’s keynote.

Update, May 7: The article has been updated to indicate that Microsoft declined to comment on this Xbox UI.
