Apple is closing a security vulnerability that enabled the FBI to access deleted Signal messages on iPhone

Apple has released iOS 26.4.2, a seemingly minor security update for iOS iPhone Which turns out to be working to patch a serious security vulnerability that allowed the FBI to read sensitive messages from the messaging app Signal, even after the app was deleted.

In early April, 404 media reported That the federal organization extracted the messages from the defendant’s phone because the system still contained copies of notifications generated when the texts were sent.

Although Apple did not specifically mention the FBI incident, the company’s description does Security note (which also applies to iPadOS 26.4.2 for iPad models) matches the issue. “Notifications marked for deletion may be unexpectedly retained on the device,” the note read. The update fixes the registry issue with Enhanced Data Redaction.

To update your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings And click general. Next, select Software update And then Update now And follow the prompts.

It’s easy to ignore small updates like this, but sometimes there’s an issue like this that needs to be addressed right away. When Apple released iOS 26.4.1 in early April, it enabled Protect stolen devices A feature on iPhones to enhance security against known vulnerabilities.
