Today, Rivian announced some changes regarding the factory built in Georgia.
The company was planning to build the facility in two phases, each of which would produce 200,000 vehicles with an annual production capacity. A total of 400,000 units. Rivian held a groundbreaking ceremony late last year.
The company now says it plans to produce only 300,000 units of its annual capacity as a result Revised loan agreement with the US Department of Energy – although it plans to reach that annual capacity sooner than originally planned. The Department of Energy will now loan Rivian $4.5 billion, instead of the originally agreed upon amount of $6.6 billion, which was announced in the final days of the Biden administration.
In 2024, Rivian Plans to establish a factory in Georgia postponed, Because they lack the funds to start construction. The pause also allowed Rivian to launch its R2 midsize car sooner, the company said. Production of the R2 began at the company’s plant in Normal, Illinois, this month. Meanwhile, Rivian has been negotiating with the Department of Energy, now under the anti-EV Trump administration, to secure its loan.
These negotiations have now resulted in a lower amount for Rivian. With vertical construction set to begin this year, the company says it expects to first draw down the loan by early 2027, and remains on track to produce vehicles in Georgia in late 2028. The DOE loan is “aligned with the updated facility design and roadmap for up to $4.5 billion,” the company said in a press release.
The company also confirms that it has plenty of room for future expansion, if it has enough money to finance construction. Rivian reported higher revenues As part of first quarter earnings.
