Compact digital cameras, also known as camcorders, are becoming popular again. Not just new models There are a fewBut so are older models. Forgotten cameras that lived for years or decades in drawers and cabinets suddenly become valuable again. If you’re like most people and ditched a separate camera for the one on your phone years ago, this might seem surprising. If you ask a younger person, especially teenagers, they are excited about these “traditional” and “classic” cameras. Meanwhile, those of us who said cameras when they were new can suddenly feel our “old school” and “classic” bones crumbling into dust.
It’s understandable to be curious about where this trend started. After all, isn’t the convenience of taking photos with your phone better than using a separate device? Well, turns out convenience isn’t the selling point. You could say the opposite, actually. Turns out there are five main reasons why these old cameras are popular again, and they’re logical enough to make it worth trying to find your old digital camera. It might be worth a little money (or at least a wave of nostalgia).
Sony CyberShot circa 2005. Yes, this camera (and its image) is over 20 years old.
“What’s old is new again,” is an old adage that is as old as it is new. Every generation is fascinated by the technology and culture that preceded it. People reach a certain age and are interested in the things their parents knew and did at that age. Seeing interest in things like Vinyl records, Cassette tapes, Cinema cameras and Instant cameras Over the past few years. There are even new cameras Which mimics the look and feel of old cameras.
There is also humor and… Warm nostalgia A must-have for “old” people who carry in their pocket the photocopiers they had in their youth.

Taking photos with your phone, which was once a novelty, is now the norm. Sure, it captures a moment, but for many, the photo itself is nothing special. The moment and the memory it evokes may be there, but the highly processed image is not. Take out your camera, wait for it to turn on, then create the moment Take this specific photo It adds to its privacy.
For the love of pixels, place this ribbon over their heads.
I noticed this when I started going back to movies after that I reviewed the Pentax 17. Keeping your phone in your hand, ostensibly to take photos, inevitably leads to distraction. “Oh, I just got a message.” “Oh, I have to check my email/Slack/Teams real quick.” Having a device that is only used for taking photos keeps your phone in your pocket or purse, out of sight and for a few glorious moments, out of mind. (The same can be said about MP3 players.)
It’s also worth noting that the young people who drive a lot of modern camera sales grew up with parents (admittedly, I’m from that generation) who were always on their phones. Talk to the younger Generation Z or the older Generation Alpha; Many do not want to be online. They grew up on the internet and know better than anyone how terrible it is here. They want to create an offline space that is just for them and their friends. He is “More at this moment“.

Canon PowerShot circa 2007.
Most modern phones can take amazing photos. This is despite having relatively small image sensors and very small lenses. Much of their image quality prowess comes from their impressive, comprehensive image processing. However, this causes phone photos to often have a certain ‘look’.
Digital cameras are quite diverse and range from old point-and-shoot cameras to full-frame digital SLRs and everything in between. It is possible to get better photos from a digital camera, although this is not guaranteed. What is easier and more likely is to get the pictures that look like various From photos taken on the phone.
Maybe the pictures aren’t good, but that’s pretty much the point. Anyone who wants the “perfect” photo can take it on their phone. If they want something stylized or different, it’s hard to beat starting with a camera that creates just that result doing its prehistoric best. Yes, you can add a filter while editing to make your phone shot look more classic. However, there is something better (and by “better,” I definitely mean objectively worse) in the images captured by early digital cameras to achieve that aesthetic.
TikTok trends often drive pop culture discourse. this Not greatBut it is what it is. Guess what it was Popular on TikTok?
TikTok’s popularity then spreads to others and eventually to the online (guilty) audience. I’ll let you make your own judgments, but it’s definitely something and a big part of the comeback of this technology that was once dead or at least dying. So…yay?
Everyone is getting into photography these days.
In the short term, this surge in popularity severely limits the availability of some popular cameras. Hopefully this will find its way into the hands of people who will actually use it, or even better, get into photography. (Many people buy records and don’t own a turntable.) It’s an expensive hobby, but I love it and would like to see more people enjoying it. In the long term, it will likely be a boon for photography enthusiasts as we will see more of these new, or at least updated, models from many of the major manufacturers.
So, take a look in that drawer you never look in or in the deep corners of your closet. Maybe your old “digital camera” is still there, covered in dust and full of long-forgotten photos. If you don’t want to be sleek and stylish with your cool, legit old camera but want to see what it’s worth, or you want a new classic model for yourself, there Lots of ways to buy and sell used camera equipment.
