I’m night reader. I usually read in the dark with me E-reader of choice In its native dark mode (if you’re not familiar, it’s the mode that turns the background black and all text and fonts white, making them very dim but still easy to read). This allows my husband and even my almost 4 year old to sleep next to me while I read, without my device blowing up.
Not surprisingly, as a night-time reader, there’s no dark mode on Kindle Colorsoft or Kindle Scribe Colorsoft It was a big complaint for me. Yes, you can turn the page color to black in books (but not in imported documents, including the AZW3, which is designed specifically for reading on Amazon devices), but the menu bars and home pages would startle me in a dark room if I wanted to switch the book I was reading or use the menu feature. It was one of many Features we found lacking in the Kindle Colorsoftbut it is what prevents me from using it on another kindle. I’d rather have my Kindle Paperwhite and know I won’t go blind at 11:45 p.m.
All this is changing today. Amazon has announced that Dark Mode will be rolling out to Colorsoft Kindle devices starting today and continuing over the coming weeks. It will also include customization options, in case you don’t want everything on your Colorsoft Kindle to go dark when using this mode. If dark mode prevents you from getting Colorsoft, you can remove that from your list of negatives.

If you’re already a Kindle Colorsoft owner, you can start checking your device today for updates, but they may not appear right away. If you don’t want to wait, you can download Update here from Amazonbut you will need to install it on your desktop computer and follow these instructions Update your Kindle manually.
Colorsoft dark mode will also provide you with options. You can choose to dim some screens while leaving others on the brighter, regular screen. This appears to be designed primarily for Kindle Scribe Colorsoftthe Digital notebook Kindle color font version, so you can choose to leave your digital notebooks in light mode while the home screen and books are in dark mode. But it will work on all Colorsoft devices (and so far, only Colorsoft devices, but we’ll see if that changes over time). Amazon says you can access this by tapping Dark Mode in the Quick Actions menu, and you’ll be able to customize what gets Dark Mode from there.
Amazon has also confirmed that any color you used on your Colorsoft Kindle Scribe notebooks or accent colors you made for your eBook annotation on any Colorsoft device will remain the same color when the device goes into Dark Mode.
