Bluesky is promoting its social network as a better place to post photos. Late Wednesday, Co Announce A new version of its application (version 1.121), which enhances the quality of images in publications both in terms of download size and resolution.
Previously, Bluesky only supported image uploads of 1MB or less. Now, this limit has doubled to 2MB. In addition, images will be displayed at a resolution of up to 4000 pixels, instead of 2000x as before.
Additionally, the company replaced the old photo grid with a scrollable carousel that can handle mixed aspect ratios without cropping. (Although early feedback from some Bluesky users suggests they prefer to choose between publishing as a grid or a carousel.)
The changes could make Bluesky more competitive with other social networks, like X or Meta’s Threads.
The latter became well known after its launch as a photo display, thanks to its support for a variety of aspect ratios and its carousel, which provided clever ways of dividing larger images for display in this way. In fact, it even inspired A Developer to create a standalone application To help users post their panoramic photos on topics. (Topics still supports The maximum image size is larger, although it is not published in the topics’ documentation.)
