Today the Senate votes to keep IRS Direct File free

The Senate is preparing to vote on a bill to revive IRS Direct File, the free tax-filing service that the Trump administration eliminated in 2025. On Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) will seek unanimous consent to pass the Direct File Act, where it will either be fast-tracked to the House or forced back to the standard, slow-moving lawmaking process if all 100 senators don’t agree.

Under the IRS Direct File Act, Americans will be able to file their taxes directly with the IRS for free. It would also ensure that the IRS does not enter into agreements that “restrict its ability” to provide free tax preparation or filing services. In prepared remarks to Congress later today, Warren will plead guilty Donating $1 million to President Donald Trump’s inauguration From TurboTax’s parent company Intuit Constant pressure To prevent the government from launching services like IRS Direct File.

“For Republicans who say filing taxes for free with the IRS is too expensive: for just one day of bombing Iran, we could pay for direct file for 20 years,” Warren remarks. “And Republicans who defend the status quo, ask yourselves why you side with TurboTax and H&R Block instead of your constituents.”
