A lot of these travel cups tend to take the shape of a sippy cup. But when sitting at home, my ideal choice is the Fellow Carter, which sips like a regular drinking bowl and is made of stainless steel — not plastic. What I tend to do is put a four-cup supply of coffee into the Carter, then close the lid and turn it on when I take a sip. 16 ounces of coffee can stay warm for hours without experiencing much oxidation or heat. Coffee in a thermally insulated drinking container tends to taste better, and last longer, than any coffee exposed to the heat and air of a coffee heater.
However, although Carter’s is prettier than most travel mugs, it will never be my favorite mug (which, for the record, is a Grinderman tour mug from 2010.) Carter also does not release aromatics quite as well as an open top cup. I can, technically, keep the coffee warm in the Carter and then pour it into another cup that feels more sentimental. But in practice, I don’t. I just drink from Carter’s. Still good morning.

It has an app. A small LED will light up or even alert your phone when your coffee is ready to drink. Honestly, one can undo one’s virtues and transgressions. And unlike the other picks here, it’s a true self-heating mug that’s powered by a battery, and can travel with you while you walk your dog. But after using Ember for years, WIRED reviewer Simon Hill turned to Ohom Ui 3 instead. Why? Partly that’s because Ember only works with a special mug that’s not dishwasher-safe or immersion-resistant. Replacing cups and heating elements is expensive. But mostly it was about simplicity: Not everything needs an app, and thermal cups are now good enough that I prefer them on the go. still, The Ember Mug has had ardent fans at WIREDIt’s a stylish device, and so are its makers And constantly work to improve it. The folks at Ember arguably think more seriously about heating coffee than anyone alive, and I’ll always be happy to test out the next version and the next to see what they have up their sleeve.
Bestinnkits Mug Warmer $26: This utilitarian little cup warmer turns on when you have a cup on top of it, and turns off when you don’t. The scale is the only “smart” feature. No Alexa, no Siri, no app. This is a nice and great safety feature. This means the warmer doesn’t start heating until your cup is on top of it, versus a warmer like the Cosori or Mr. Coffee that can heat up before your cup is there and thus maintains the temperature instantly. It’s a decision, and you have to make it. The cost difference is fairly negligible between all of them.
