Hello friends! Welcome to Installer No. 123 Your guide to the best and edge-The most wonderful things in the world. (If you’re new here, hello, what image of Artemis did you make your wallpaper with, you can also read all the old versions at Installer Home.)
This week I was reading about it Sam Altman and Satoshi Nakamoto and Chess drama and Iranian dirty bombersBuying the things I need Modify your old iPod-Make new smart videos DualShot recorderto watch Crime 101 Now that it’s live, I finally get it Stream Deck Mini To control all My desk lightsrevisit the unbelievable 17776 series From our friends at sp nation, Moved all my cable clutter to This is the new power strip from AnkerFinally organizing my new wardrobe. Six months after we moved.
I also have new seasons of some great shows, a deep dive into space imagery, a book about our intelligent brains, and much more.
I also want to try something new here. I find a lot of people showcasing things they’ve made, and I almost never mention them here – I much prefer people talking about things they make He loves Instead of the things they have to make-You know? But for once, and maybe just once, I want to put out an issue full of cruel self-promotion. (I will continue to check everything I list, to the best of my ability.)
So, for the first time ever: Tell me about the thing you made! Apps, games, podcasts, weird tchotchkes, and anything you think we in the Installerverse might be interested in. I’ll be checking out as many as I can, and highlighting my favorites in a couple of weeks. And I’ll tell you about the thing I’ve been building too.
Well, fun week of stuff! let’s do it.
(As always, the best part of… Installer These are your thoughts and advice. What are you watching/reading/listening to/piling on the dining room table this week? Tom Hitchens He’s one of the few people whose work I can always spot in a second, even in a sea of thumbnails. You probably know Tom as the man behind you Byte reviewthe rare tech-related YouTube channel that doesn’t scream at you all the time. I’ve always enjoyed Tom’s work, and particularly loved his aesthetic sensibility; The guy just knows how to make things look calm and cool.
I wondered, given the way he thought about technology, how Tom would set up his phone. (I had a feeling I could guess the color of his wallpaper.) So I asked him to participate! This is Tom’s home screen, plus some information about which apps he uses and why:
Phone: iPhone 17 Pro Max.
wallpaper: One of my, from Cascade package (Probably my favorite we’ve ever made!).
Applications: Calendar, Photos, Clock, Camera, Mail, X, Themes, Craft, YouTube, YouTube Studio, Settings, Gmail, Todoist, Lightroom, Instagram, ChatGPT, Notion, Messages, Phone, Safari, WhatsApp, Spotify.
My app layout has remained the same since then as the iPhone 6 (yes, I know, it’s pretty boring). I’ve tried changing it several times but muscle memory keeps me locked in here!
Some new apps for me are:
I also asked Tom to share with me some of the things he’s interested in now. Here’s what he sent back:

“Reread Turning a blind eyeWritten by Peter Watts. The part about the Rorschach ship and how intelligence without consciousness looks eerily similar to what AI currently does. Worth re-reading.”—Dawit
“Teacher Claude Cowork To use NotePlan. It creates daily, weekly and monthly notes. It’s creating notes that act as memories and referring to those notes when I drop updates throughout the day. “With the attention devoted this week to the Artemis II mission, I remembered the video,”The photography behind Earthrise“, 2 years ago. It’s also a look at early photography of NASA astronauts. It led me down the rabbit hole to learn more about the Earthrise photo and the similar or more famous photo.Blue marble“From Apollo 17 in 1972.” – Craig
Task manager He’s back! And I am forced in this space to tell you every time Task manager He’s back, because Task manager Great, fun and everyone should watch it. The new crew of contestants — which includes Kumail Nanjiani, who I’ll watch in anything — are downright funny and weird, and somehow the show keeps finding more ridiculous things to do. I hope this show lasts a thousand seasons. I will watch them all.
