There’s something exhilarating about seeing astronauts taking stunning photos of Earth with the same model as the iPhone I have in my back pocket.
this week, The four astronauts aboard the Integrity spacecraft used the iPhone 17 Pro Max To take selfies during their historic journey around the moon.

It’s one of the first times NASA has allowed astronauts to use personal smartphones on spaceflight, but this isn’t the first time iPhones have left the planet.
In this episode of One More Thing, embedded above, I touch on several Apple devices that have made the trip to space over the years for various missions, including the Macintosh Portable that sent the first email from space.
For the Artemis II mission, select iPhone images were shared NASA’s Flickr account. Some of the shots were stunning images of the crew looking down at Earth. Others were group shots or photographs documenting their work.
The iPhone wasn’t the best camera ever (the most amazing moon shots came from Nikon DSLRs), but it has since become noticeable Personal smartphones have been approved for use in space by NASA For the first time in February. Seeing the astronauts using the front-facing camera to capture their time certainly awed many who were watching the live feed of the mission from Earth.
