The head of AGI at OpenAI is taking a leave of absence

Hello team,

I hope you all had a great break. I wanted to share with you three updates at AGI Deployment today.

First, Brad decided to move into a new role focused on special projects, including DeployCo efforts, reporting to Sam. He has been our go-to destination for complex deals and investments across the company, and this shift allows him to focus all his energy there. Thank you so much, Brad, for everything you do as Director of Operations. We are all deeply grateful for what you have built and led.

Dennis will step in to take on Brad’s scope, with the exception of our government work and OpenAI for countries, which will be folded into our strategic organization. Dennis will report directly to me. Dennis has decades of enterprise experience, including several senior roles at Salesforce, most recently as CEO of Slack. She is the perfect person to lead all of our commercial teams into their next chapter. Please join me in congratulating Denise on her new role; I couldn’t be more excited to partner with her even more closely.

Secondly, Kate has decided to step down as CMO to focus on her cancer recovery, and plans to return to a different, narrower role when her health allows. Gary will lead marketing until we hire a new Marketing Director, and will report to Jason. Gary and Jason will lead the search for Kate’s replacement, assisting Kate while she is on leave. We are so grateful to Kate for building an amazing marketing team in record time and making our brands and products shine on the biggest stages like the Super Bowl. Although we will miss her brilliance in marketing, and although it was a painful decision for her, I am so glad she is focusing on her health. Please join me in sending her all the healing vibes.

Third, a personal update. I have to take medical leave for the next several weeks. I’ve done everything I can to try to avoid it, but unfortunately my body isn’t cooperating.

As I said when I joined, I had a relapse of my neuroimmune condition a few weeks before I started working. It’s been a bit up and down since then, and last month was particularly rough on the health front. Throughout my time here, I put off medical tests and new treatments to stay fully focused on the job and not miss a single day of work. I took time off for the first time a couple of weeks before the break to get some medical tests done, and it’s now clear that I’ve put in too much effort and really need to try new interventions to stabilize my health.

The timing is crazy because we have an exciting roadmap that the team is implementing, and I would hate to miss even a minute of it. But the company is in good hands; We have an excellent leadership team that is ready to step up. While I’m away, Greg will handle the product; We have a great strategy to implement and everyone is focused on that. On the business side, Jason, Sarah and Dennis will be holding down the fort. Really grateful to them for giving me the space to get back on my feet.

I can’t wait to get back in the arena with all of you soon.

Much love to you all.
