Sony’s affordable 3-way speakers are the easy-talking secret to a very affordable sound system. It’s unusually good for its asking price, with three separate drivers, including a tweeter, a 5.12-inch tweeter, and a high-range “super tweeter” for sparkling treble sound. Their bass isn’t great, so you may need to add a subwoofer in the future, but this is the best way I know to get great sound on a budget.

Backed by former leading guru Andrew Jones, Elac is one of the best speaker brands I’ve tested for affordable performance. The Debut 2.0 is a great mid-range model praised by WIRED editor Parker Hall for its lush, smooth, neutral sound that gives you a natural representation of your music and other audio.

16 gauge speaker wire: A recent test in which audiophiles couldn’t recognize sound sent through a banana also seems to confirm that basic speaker wire is all you’ll ever need. This cheap Amazon roll should be durable and versatile enough for any audio device.
Banana plugs: These simple plugs make it easy to connect your speakers to any modern amplifier. You can connect them to your speaker wire using a cable cutter, or take them to your local stereo store if you’re not a DIY fan.
