TCL acquires Sony’s TV business


After signing a non-binding agreement in January Separating her television work, Today Sony officially announced TCL will pay approximately 75.4 billion yen (more than $473 million) for a 51 percent stake in a new joint venture called Bravia Inc., with Sony retaining the remaining 49 percent.

Bravia Inc., which will be headquartered at Sony’s Osaki office in Tokyo, is expected to begin operations in April 2027. When they announced the joint venture, the companies said the TVs they sell will carry the Sony and Bravia brands, “leveraging TCL’s advanced display technology, advantages of global scale, industrial footprint, end-to-end cost efficiency, and vertical supply chain strength.”

The new wholly-owned subsidiary will handle Sony’s home entertainment business covering R&D, design, manufacturing and support of various devices. These include Bravia TVs, other flat panel displays, projectors, home audio devices, and home theater systems.

In today’s announcement, Sony Senior Vice President Kenji Tanaka says that through the strategic partnership, Bravia Inc. “To provide new customer value to a global audience and drive further growth in the home entertainment space.” As part of the deal, TCL will also acquire Sony EMCS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary responsible for manufacturing Sony home entertainment products. Negotiations are still ongoing for another Sony manufacturer, Shanghai Suoguang Visual Products Co., Ltd..
