It’s very rare for one of the biggest bands in the world to take a hiatus for several years, but that’s what happened when all seven members of BTS had to complete mandatory military service in South Korea.
Starting in 2022, each BTS member took a four-year break to complete their required duties and work on some solo material. And now the biggest band in the world is back. RM, J-Hope, V, Jung Kook, Jin, Jimin and Suga (who was recently spotted in… Samsung Galaxy Unboxed Promo) They are reunited and are making up for lost time.
Fans can watch a special documentary, BTS: The Return, chronicling their long-awaited reunion, and A live comeback concert, both of which will be broadcast Netflix. It’s the first time Streaming service He streamed a live concert, so if you’re part of the BTS army, you won’t want to miss this event.
There’s also a new album. That’s a lot for fans to take in at once — so here’s what you need to know to listen to all things BTS this month.
All seven BTS members were required under South Korean law to serve in the country’s military. The law stipulates that able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 must serve between 18 and 21 months in military service, with no exception for pop stars.
However, the band was able to postpone their service for two years, and Jin, the eldest member of the group, was enlisted in 2022 and completed his service in 2024. After that, the rest of the band members carried out their enlistment in phases, and they all finished their required duties by mid-2025, allowing them time to work on their new album.
BTS performs at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards.
Arirang is BTS’s fifth studio album, released today, March 20. The band enlisted an all-star cast of producers to collaborate on 14 new songs for the album, including Diplo, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Mike WiLL Made-It and Ryan Tedder.
BTS Go Live | Arirang is a special live concert that will be broadcast in over 190 countries from Gwanghwamun in Seoul Saturday 21 March. The site is part of Gyeongbokgung Palace, a royal building originally built in 1395. While the palace will close its regular tourist operations for the day, thousands of visitors are expected to gather at the site for the show. This means you will be cheering alongside the fans in Seoul.
The concert will celebrate the release of BTS’s album Arirang, and will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. KST. For fans in the US, you’ll have to wake up very early to watch everything live: 7 a.m. ET/4 a.m. PT. The ceremony serves as the unofficial launch of BTS World Tour Which starts in April. (Not surprisingly, most of the dates have already sold out.)
BTS: The Return, directed by Bao Nguyen, follows the band as they reunite in Los Angeles after completing their military service, solo projects, and beginning work on ARIRANG. The documentary will be released exclusively on Netflix on Friday, March 27.
