Apple released iOS 26.3.1(a)the first one Improve background securityOn Tuesday, March 17th. The update fixes an issue with WebKit, the engine that powers Safari and other third-party browsers in iOS, the tech giant wrote online.
If you enable automatic installation of background security improvements, your iPhone should install this update on its own. If you don’t have automatic installations, or if you want to make sure your iPhone downloads the update, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Background security improvements. From here, your iPhone will either say iOS 26.3.1(a) is already installed or you’ll be shown an option to install the update.
Apple typically notices when an update addresses a bug that was exploited in the wild. While the company did not clarify whether this is the case for this update, Apple recommends that everyone download the update.
Apple introduced backend security improvements in November when the company launched iOS 26.1. “Background Security Enhancements provide lightweight security releases for components like the Safari browser, the WebKit framework stack, and other system libraries,” Apple Books online.
These new updates remind me of Fast security responses Which Apple introduced in 2023. These updates were a way for the company to quickly deploy security fixes to devices, similar to background security improvements, and both updates share the same naming convention. However, Apple has not issued a quick security response since its release iOS 16.5.1(c) In July 2023.
Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on any relationship between rapid security responses and back-end security improvements.
