Golf’s unofficial “fifth major” comes as the world’s best players head to Ponte Vedra Beach in Florida for the Players Championship.
Currently world No. 2 Rory McIlroy comes into this year’s tournament as the defending champion. However, the Irish star’s hopes of equaling Scottie Scheffler’s recent winning streak at Sawgrass are in doubt due to a back injury that forced him to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational last weekend. Despite the disruption to his preparations, McIlroy remains among the main favourites, with Schaeffler and Colin Morikawa currently leading the betting with the bookmakers.
The total prize pool up for grabs at the PGA Major Championship is $25 million and $4.5 million for the overall winner.
Irishman Rory McIlroy celebrated St Patrick’s Day in style last year by defeating JJ Spawn in a playoff to win the Players Championship for the second time.
