OpenAI is launching GPT-5.4, the latest version of its AI model that the company says combines advances in thinking, coding, and professional work involving spreadsheets, documents, and presentations. It’s also the first model of OpenAI to have native computer capabilities, meaning it can operate a computer for you and complete tasks across different applications.
While OpenAI is bringing GPT-5.4 to its API and AI-powered programming tool, Codex, it is bringing its inference model, GPT-5.4 Thinking, to ChatGPT. OpenAI says GPT-5.4 can write code to operate computers, as well as issue keyboard and mouse commands in response to screenshots. GPT-5.4 also shows improvements while using web browsers, as well as being able to call tools and APIs more accurately and efficiently to help it complete tasks.
The model is better at asking questions that require gathering information from multiple sources, too, with OpenAI saying the model “can search more consistently across multiple rounds to identify the most relevant sources, especially for ‘needle in a haystack’ questions, and synthesize them into a clear, well-reasoned answer.” OpenAI claims that GPT-5.4 is “the most realistic model to date,” with individual claims 33 percent more likely to be false than GPT-5.2.
Within ChatGPT, GPT-5.4 Thinking will provide an outline of its operation for more complex queries, while also allowing users to modify or change their request as it is being responded to. “This makes it easy to steer the model toward the exact result you want without starting over or needing multiple additional cycles,” says OpenAI. This feature is available now in the ChatGPT web app and on Android, but OpenAI says it’s “coming soon” to the iOS app.
GPT-5.4 is now rolling out via ChatGPT, Codex, and API, with the GPT-5.4 Thinking Model coming to Plus, Team, and Pro users. There is also a GPT-5.4 Pro model for “maximum performance on complex tasks” being rolled out in the API, as well as for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users.
