Mastodon now has a button to share content from other websites

Sharing content on Mastodon just got easier with the addition of the global “Share to Mastodon” button to the decentralized social media platform. Announced on Mondaythe tool allows users to share content on any Mastodon server by linking your Mastodon account and redirecting you to the server where the account is located. The blog post announcing the feature also explains that the tool “runs entirely in your browser: no tracking data, and does not store any information on the server.”

Previously, the “Share” tool was not available on Mastodon mainly due to the technical challenges that came with the decentralized design of the platform. As Mastodon’s blog post states, “The distributed nature of the network is Mastodon’s greatest strength, but it also means that having a share button that takes you to the ‘correct’ Mastodon server for your account is more complex than a simple hyperlink.” Although third-party solutions exist, the blog notes that none of them are found everywhere or easy to find.
