Google just announced that Gemini will soon be able to take care of some multi-step tasks on your phone, like ordering food or calling the car, starting first with the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and the just-announced Samsung Galaxy S26 phones. It all sounds like the features Apple announced for Siri at its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference — before Apple postponed those features planned for March 2025 and Which has not been released yet.
On stage, Sameer Samat, head of Android at Google, demonstrated how Gemini’s new agent features work to help negotiate a pizza dinner order through a busy family group chat. Samat asks Jiminy to look at the chat thread and see what to order, then place the order using the delivery app. On screen — in a pre-recorded video, not live — you can see Gemini finding out what everyone wants from the group chat and displaying that in the window. The user then, via a voice request, asks Gemini to complete this request, naming a specific pizzeria. Gemini then clicks on GrubHub to set up the order, all still on the screen. When an order is ready, Gemini sends an alert so the user can review it and actually hit the submit button.
No matter that this situation does not seem Which It’s difficult to do this yourself in the GrubHub app (or even by calling a pizzeria to talk to a human), and this is a potentially big moment for agent AI. Google recently added Gemini capability to Automatic browsing for users in Chromeand being able to do something similar within Android seems like a logical next step; Google clearly wants Gemini to be seen as a helpful agent or productivity partner rather than just a chatbot or series of AI models.
Assuming Gemini proxy features are also released “soon” e.g Google is promising And while Apple isn’t pulling a rabbit out of its hat, Google will also out-perform Apple in some of the more impressive Apple Intelligence demonstrations — also only seen in pre-recorded videos — from its WWDC 2024 presentation. One feature Apple showed off is letting Siri understand what’s on your screen and take action on it, meaning you can ask Siri to add an address from a thread to the contact card of that person you’re messaging. Apple showed off how Siri will be able to take actions within and across apps on your behalf. The company said Siri will be able to understand your personal context, meaning you can ask it when your mom’s flight lands and the assistant will pull the information from your email and show it to you.
Almost two years later, none of that is available yet. When Apple announced the features He will be latethe company even I pulled an ad Show features. Based on a report from Bloomberg-Some features may not arrive Until iOS 27.
There are still many questions about Gemini’s new abilities, of course. They will need to be physically charged. We’ll have to try it out to see if it’s as useful and functional as advertised — Google is calling this initial launch “beta,” so there may be some rough edges. We don’t know how many developers will allow Gemini to browse their apps on behalf of users, which it will do edge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel likes to call him DoorDash problem. (Google says Gemini will be able to work in “select ride-sharing and food apps.”)
But it seems that Google has outpaced Apple in a big way, and now Apple has more to do to catch up.
