after The popular weather app was sold to Apple in March 2020As some of its core features were integrated into Apple Weather, the creators of Dark Sky left Apple to create another alternative. Their new app is called Peak weatherembraces the fact that forecasts will never be completely accurate by providing a key forecast for today’s conditions and several alternative forecasts.

Acme weather currently Only available for iOS. An Android version is planned, but there is no release schedule yet. You can try it for two weeks for free, but a $25 annual subscription is required if you like what you see and want to keep using it. Dark Sky cost $3.99 when it was a third-party app, but the creators of Acme Weather claim that their new app will provide better forecasts and more weather information than Dark Sky did, sourced from satellite data, ground station observations, and radar data.

The alternative forecast will be displayed alongside the preliminary forecast as a series of lines showing how conditions will progress throughout the day. When alternative forecast lines are clustered close together, this is an indication that the initial forecast is reliable. When there is a wider spread between forecasts, the forecast is more likely to change throughout the day.

To expand the information available through the app during active weather events, Acme Weather also allows users to report the conditions they are in, which appear on the map as simple icons. Community-reported conditions are linked to other maps including radar, lightning, rain and snow amounts, wind, temperature, humidity, storm tracks, and cloud cover, which are included with forecasts based on their relevance to the forecast conditions.

Dark Sky has been known for its excellent notifications, which is another feature being developed with Acme Weather. The new app will offer user-customizable notifications that could include “real-time rain warnings,” government-issued severe weather warnings, nearby lightning activity, and even an alert about when you might be able to see a rainbow in your location.
