General Electric has It announced two new versions of its famous Opal ice machines With smaller footprints that take up less counter space, and more affordable price tags. Like the larger and more expensive General Electric Opal 2.0 UltraThe two new machines produce chunk ice — also often referred to as chewable ice, or granulated ice — by freezing layers of ice chips to produce easier-to-chew nuggets with a larger surface area to cool drinks faster.
Previously only available in restaurants, General Electric launched its first Opal ice machine at home in 2015. Newer models, like the Opal 2.0 Ultra, start at a steep $579, but the new GE Profile Opal Mini is expected to cost $299 when it becomes available sometime in July 2026, while the GE Profile Opal Mini Pro will be priced at $379.
The entry-level GE Profile Opal Mini is much smaller than other Opal models because it ditches the water tank on the side for a built-in tank that fills from the top. It can still produce up to 34 pounds of ice per day if you empty and refill it carefully, and includes a filter to improve the taste of your coins, and an automatic descaling function. But as EdgeWhile reviewing the Opal 2.0 Ultra, Jennifer Pattison Toohey found that cleaning these machines is still difficult.
The Professional Edition of the GE Profile Opal Mini includes a side reservoir so you don’t have to refill it as frequently (at the expense of more space) as well as a filter that prevents scale buildup, a stainless steel ice scoop, and more premium stainless steel finishes (color options are still being finalized). The Pro model also includes Wi-Fi connectivity so the device can be scheduled from the mobile app, or notifications sent about maintenance issues.
