Metroid Prime 4: Beyond It launched on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 in December, but if you’re curious for more, Metroid Prime 1–3: A Visual Retrospective It’s a great way to dive into it, especially since it’s on sale now. Normally priced at $49.99, you can currently purchase the hardcover version for $41.08 (about $9) at Amazon and Walmartwhich is one of the first discounts we’ve seen on a backgammon book.
Developed in collaboration with Nintendo and Retro Studios, the 210-page Piggyback Gallery is an excellent tribute to the past 20 years of Metroid. The book itself resembles a piece of art, sewn into a cloth-like hardcover, with a red embossed outline of the series’ iconic hero, Samus Aran. Inside you’ll find a wealth of drawings and sketches covering the entire trilogy – plus… Metroid Prime Remastered – Including detailed illustrations of environments, common enemies, and bosses. It even features concept art that never made it into the final games.
But what really makes the book stand out are the behind-the-scenes stories. It touches on everything from Retro Studios getting tired when charging Metroid Prime 2: Echoes To the thoughts surrounding Nintendo’s secret development process. Margin notes from series producer Kensuke Tanabe are particularly entertaining, as they reveal discussions about the design more than two decades ago.
