Ferrari’s first electric car will feature an interior designed by Jony Ive


Ferrari has released the first interior images of the company’s first all-electric supercar, called Ferrari Luce (“light” in Italian). Ferrari decided to outsource the interior design work on the Luce to Yves and his partner Marc Newson, who together run Design store LoveFrom. Ive is obviously well known for his work as Apple’s former chief designer, overseeing iconic products like the iMac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. Ive’s work at Apple has focused on elegant simplicity, so it’s somewhat surprising to see a bunch of buttons on the Luce’s interior. Ive’s influence is also evident in the materials used in the Luce’s interior, such as anodized aluminum and tempered glass from specialist Corning, two key components of Apple products.

The steering system features a streamlined three-spoke design inspired by classic Ferrari wheels from the 1950s and 1960s. The spokes are made from 100 percent recycled aluminum, CNC-machined from 19 individual parts, and weigh 400 grams less than a standard Ferrari wheel.

The Luce has three main displays: the instrument cluster, the center display, and the rear control panel. The gauge cluster actually moves with the steering wheel (a Ferrari first), using interlaced OLED displays that mix digital and analogue signals. The ultra-thin OLED displays are manufactured by Samsung with cutouts that reveal a second screen underneath, adding real visual depth.

Eve’s influence is also evident in the materials used in the Luce’s interior, such as anodized aluminum and tempered glass from specialist Corning.

The center screen sits on a ball-and-socket joint, allowing it to swivel toward the driver or passenger. It also includes a palm rest so you can interact with the controls without looking. The multi-graphics mechanical display with three independent motors functions as a clock, chronograph, compass or launch control indicator.

The keychain features its own e-ink display, which Ferrari claims is the first in a car, that only uses energy when it changes color. Insert the key into the center console, and the e-ink display turns from yellow to black as the cabin wakes up.

The shifter features Gorilla Glass. In fact, there are about 40 pieces featuring durable, scratch-resistant glass scattered throughout the cabin, some of which feature tiny laser-etched holes for depositing ink for graphics.

It makes sense for Ferrari to outsource the work to Ives and his company. After all, the Ferrari FF was the first production car to feature Apple CarPlay back in 2014. However, the automaker has yet to announce whether it will adopt the more integrated system CarPlay Ultra in the future.

Ive was in San Francisco to unveil the new interior, telling reporters that his company had been working in secret for five years. The famous designer said that he was not aware of the safety and regulatory requirements for automobile design before embarking on this particular project.
