When we first learned of the amazing price of Samsung Galaxy Z TriFoldOur first question was: Who would be able to afford a phone that costs around $3,000? The answer seems to be more people than you think.

When our team members logged onto the Samsung website this morning as the TriFold went on sale in the US for the first time, only one person was able to secure the unit. We don’t actually have any indication of how many TriFolds Samsung has made available to buyers in the US and how many have been sold so far, but it does indicate that there is demand for the new phone – even though it costs $2,900, which is CNET’s price. Chief correspondent David Lomb describes him as “troubled.”

Perhaps it’s no surprise that this innovative phone has been so popular since it was clear early on from hands-on with the device that this phone is a true two-for-one device, combining the best of Samsung’s phone and tablet technologies.

“I would be surprised if Samsung had huge quantities available and there were enough affluent tech enthusiasts in the US market who wanted to try this latest and greatest piece of technology,” said Ben Wood, senior analyst and chief marketing officer at CCS Insight. “As we’ve seen in the broader foldable market so far, it’s still a niche category, but something as eye-catching as this means Samsung has the best piece of ‘smart gadgets’ available in the US right now.”

If you’re not one of the first enthusiastic users to get your hands on the TriFold today, or if you’re just curious, you can expect our full review soon. After spending some decent time with the device, we’ll be able to share a more detailed verdict on whether this expensive phone is actually worth nearly $3,000.
