Microsoft’s PowerToys team is considering creating a top menu bar for Windows 11, just like Linux, macOS, or older versions of Windows. Menu bar, or Dock command panel As Microsoft calls it, it will be a new optional user interface that provides quick access to tools, system resource monitoring, and more.
Microsoft has provided concept images of what it’s looking to build, and is asking for feedback on whether Windows users would use PowerToy like this. “The dock is designed to be highly configurable,” explains Nils Lute, a senior product manager at Microsoft. “It can be placed on the top, left, right or bottom edge of the screen, and the extensions can be installed in three distinct areas of the dock: start, middle and end.”
If Microsoft goes ahead with this dock, it will also include customization options to change the background, design, and overall theme. You will also be able to easily rearrange the extensions between different docking areas and install them freely.
This docking is designed to complement Microsoft’s existing work with Command panel launcher Which the company launched last year. The Command Palette is similar to Apple’s Spotlight panel in macOS, giving you quick access to commands, apps, and development tools.
Microsoft is currently asking for feedback on this proposal, and developers can try out an early version of it by importing a project from Microsoft PowerToys GitHub repository To Visual Studio.
